Startup Message

On a 3 yr old HP Pavilion. At startup when the "Welcome" message appears but before the desktop appears I now get a message stating that "Windows cannot find 'copy'. Make sure you typed the word correctly. To search for a file click START then click SEARCH"

I can close this message and everything then loads correctly but I don't know how to track down this problem.

Hi Alan,

You can access the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article at
www.microsoft.com and see if one of the Startup applications is causing
this.

It may require some "process of elimination" troubleshooting but you should
be able to isolate this offending program.

Greetings

1. Open Regedit by going to Start>>Run and then typing regedit.

2. Then do a find for "winshow" When any key is found, delete it by
pressing the delete key. Be sure to hit the F3 (Find Next) key after
each. There are about 10 or so that need to be find. Regedit will say
"Finished Searching" when complete.

3. Repeat the same step above, but this time search for "winlink"

4. After that is done, close regedit.

5. You will then have to search for the the .dll files stored on the
harddrive. Go to search for files at c: Then search for "winshow" and
"winlink" Delete any files that you find. (Im my case I did not find
any files named winlink)

6. Restart the computer

The "copy" problem when starting Windows is apparently caused by spyware
- Winshow. Open regedit and find "winshow" and delete any key found.
Repeat search with "winlink". Then search on the hard drive for .dll
files that are winshow.dll and winlink.dll and delete. Reboot. Be
extremely careful in the registry. In fact, you might want to run the
spyware removal tools Spybot Search & Destroy (www.security.kolla.de)
and Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) first. Be sure to update those
programs before running them. It is preferrable to run the removal
tools in Safe Mode.
