I'm sorry for reposting.. i am getting desparate now!!
a quick scenario.... computer (fairly new P4 2.8, 512MB RAM)... starts up,
gets to the xp splash screen, then screen goes black with arrow cursor..
system is not frozen as the mouse moves the cursor around.
ctl-alt-del does nothing..... ctl-shft-esc does nothing. safe mode same
issue..... i can access the BIOS (meaning video card works).
should i try toreinstall OS on top of existing one?

please.. all suggestions/comments are welcome.

Did you check to see if all your inner hardwares are seated properly?
Have you touched anything or changed hardware recently?

yes i can get to safe mode however, its the same issue there..... no
desktop... just a black screen with a moveable cursor ... i can access the
bios, so im thinking its not the integrated video...

i tried a different hard drive just now and the video works... so the issue
must be a winxp problem... is there such a thing as using sfc on a slave
drive? i removed the hard drive and am scanning for virus infections but i
dont think that is the cause... or is it?
i tried to reinstall windows ontop of the existing one and i kept geting
errors... like "cannot delete file xxxxx" click esc to continue... there
were many files like that. once past that point, i got an error message that
the windows/print folder cannot be created... click cancel to abort
installation..... aaaauugghhh!!!!

It sounds like your HD has some bad sectors on it. If the drive is a Maxtor,
I have found that the life of the drive can be less than a year. Where I use
to work we notice this with our Dell's having Maxtor drives.

I've got the same problem. I've found many more cases on the internet but not
yet with a solution for this issue.
So your not allone with this problem.

Had this happen also. It turned out to be a device that Windows couldn't
open. In my case I was using hibernate to shut down and on start up my usb
attached scanner wouldn't open properly until a complete reboot. I detached
the scanner and all worked. Just a thought.
