on start up my pc gets half way through the booting up
proccess then carries out a restart and continuously repeats this. I did
manage at one stage to copy a message that appeared but I have since been
unable to reproduce it. The msg went something like as follows:
HD audio shortcut
The instruction at "Ox 7c9118d0 ref memory at 0x7c95c488"
The memory could not be "written"
click ok to terminate the program.

ANY HELP WILL BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED

First things first -- disable the stoopid automatic reboot on error.
(It's not your fault it's set up that way; that's the Windows
default. Once again, Microsoft should have its head examined.)

In Help and Support (Win + F1 keys), search
reboot on error
and then select "To specify what Windows does if the system stops
unexpectedly". Following those instructions, uncheck the box
"automatically reboot". Now you'll actually have time to read stop
errors.

Stop errors, once you have the error code, can be diagnosed at
<http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm>.

The Event Log may or may not help you. I personally found its
"explanations" worthless when I had persistent stop errors, but other
folks have had better luck. Search
using event viewer
in Help and Support. Select the Overview article of that title, and
it will give you a link to open Event Viewer.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What drivers
are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.

This problem can be difficult to ferret out if you can't boot to the Desktop
and you don't see any error messages. See if you can boot into Safe Mode as
that minimizes the number of devices, drivers and services that are loaded.
To boot to Safe Mode restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key until
you see the bootmenu. Select Safe Mode. If it boot to the Desktop you will
notice poor video display and that is normal from Safe Mode. From there you
can disable the Autorestart feature by accessing the Control Panel->System
Properties->Startup and Recovery section Settings Button. You can also
access the Administrative tools and look in the Event Viewer by once again
going into the Control Panel. See if you can find error messages that might
correspond to problems then post them back here.

Or, I would suggest, not even then. :)
