Startup Hangs on Executing wlnotify.dll

Bryan R. Meyer

Hello Everyone:

I posted previously about a problem where Windows XP always says I
have no paging file on startup and creates a temporary paging file.
After turning on the verbose message flag in the registry, I
determined that this problem is related to how Windows boots. After I
type in my password on the Welcome screen, Windows starts to load my
profile but then hangs when it says: "Executing
C:\Windows\system32\wlnotify.dll". I can bypass this if I press the
"Alt-Ctrl-Del" sequence, but this causes me to get the paging file
error which is unacceptable for the performance of my machine.

I completed routine maintenance to see if it would help the problem.
I ran Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, ChkDsk, Norton Antivirus 2004,
and AdAware and SpyBot all in an attempt to make sure my computer was
free of viruses, spyware, etc. This did not help with Windows hanging
on wlnotify.dll.

I then attempted to boot my computer in Safe Mode. I had NO problems
here. It did not hang on wlnotify.dll. I then tried running the
computer in Safe Mode with Networking. This time, Windows did hang
when executing wlnotify.dll.
That tells me that I am having networking issues on bootup.

I have a DSL connection and I'm connected to a Microsoft MN-100 wired
router. I attempted to enter my IP address and default gateway
settings manually under the TCP/IP Properties, but this did not
rectify the problem.

What am I missing? Does it sound like a networking issue?

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get to
it.
Any idea on what it says regarding my problem?

Thanks,
Bryan

This is what it says..

XP Pro??
If you are using a stand-alone computer or if you want to disable
verbose
status messages on only one computer, follow these steps:
1 Click Start, and then click Run.
2 In the Open box, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
3 Expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates,
and then
click System.
4 In the right pane, double-click Verbose vs. normal status
messages.
5 Click Disabled, and then click OK.
6 Close Group Policy Object Editor, click OK, and then quit Active
Directory Users and Computers.

Thanks Wesley, that got rid of the wlnotify.dll coming up, but my pc
is
still slow as heck! It wasn't too bad before that started to appear.
Any
ideas if it is likely there are other problems because of that
wlnotify.dll
issue? If so, any ideas on repairing the damage?

I have XP Pro, AMD Duron. Clicking on a program now sees up to a 30
second
delay before it comes up, etc.

Thanks again

And this..
Trev;

I don't believe the two issues are related.

I purposely set my machine up so that wlnotify.dll comes up at boot.
