Startup Freeze

I have recently made three attempts at installing XP Pro.
Each time everything works fine for a few power cycles,
but the shifting blue dots under the start-up logo keep
going through more and more cycles before startup
completes. Eventually, the dot cycling never stops, and
powering down is the only way out. No problem running in
safe mode. Using dual boot with 98SE, 500MHz celeron, 512
MB Ram, 40 MB plus 10MB HD. Have not seen this mentioned
any place I looked so far.

Usually installation problems with MS operating systems are caused by
failing hardware. Start your testing with the RAM first, hard drive
second, and so on.
