I'm trying to start up my laptop and receive the following
error:

Disk I/O error: Status = 00001000

Windows 2000 counld not start because the following file
is missing or corrupt: <windows 2000 root>\system32
\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
..

Is the file actually missing?
Can you get into the command prompt by pressing F8 just before Windows
starts. (you have to be pretty nifty on a fast machine)?

In Dos, you can look for the file.

Have you done anything to your laptop eg installed a bootmanager or moved a
partition?

A search on Google for
File Corrupt ntoskrnl.exe
showed that many people have had the same problem, perhaps you will
recognise a similarity with some of them.
