On my Vista Ultimate the music link on the startmenu is no longer working.
right clicking it brings up an empty properties window. And on the "Start
Menu" tab in "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" window, music is no longer
an option - simply no there. how can i restore this? Appreciate any help so i
don't have to reinstall the whole OS.

Hi Causton,

Did you relocate the Music folder earlier to a removable drive perhaps? If that's not the case, then fix the shell folder path for "Music" in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserShell Folders

Or you may use the REG file in this link.

In my case the Music folder is in its default place, registry points out to
it correctly, and all is fine - EXCEPT the icon!. For some reason, the icon
is a normal folder yellow instead of the Music greenish one with a music
symbol. And that has only happen to one of the users on this same machine.
Other two users and the admin have a proper icon. Do you know why is this?

Either it's lost its desktop.ini file, which specifies the custom icon. Or
the folder no longer has its read-only attribute set, which is what tells
Explorer to process the desktop.ini file.

Desktop.ini is just a text file with a special extension. It normally has
its hidden & system attributes set, so you need to set Explorer's view
options to show hidden files & not hide protected OS files to check for it.
If it doesn't exist, recreate it with the following contents:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21790
InfoTip=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-12689
IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-108
IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll
IconIndex=-237
[LocalizedFileNames]
Sample Music.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21806

If the desktop.ini file is present, then you need to set the read-only
attribute on the folder. Open a command prompt window to the parent
directory and type:

attrib +r "<foldername>"<Enter>

Quotes are only neccessary if there are spaces in the folder name.

Thanks a lot! It was the desktop.ini that got accidentally overwritten by an
old XP one, when I bulk copied my music from the old PC.

Hi Ramesh ,

Kindly help me in this issue as I am very frustrated and upset at DELL for
not helping me with my problem. Please go through the problem and let me know
if there is any fix for this: -
The Windows Media Player preinstalled in Windows Vista of DELL Dimension is
giving lot of trouble. There is a crackling and hesitation of the sound on
all types of files mp3,wma,cda, etc etc.
The resolution is to disable the enhancements of the Audio Codecs of the
system.
Once the enhancements are disabled the sorround sound and the quality of
sound is gone.
People are paying for the Integrated sound Audio Codecs 7.1 of DELL on the
system with VISTA.
IS THERE ANY FIX FOR THIS ?
The DELL tech Service people are not able to help as most of the call center
takers are not even aware of how to fix this problem.
Microsoft does not want to help except sending a link to their library.
What is the resolution.
SHORT LIVE VISTA. SHORT LIVE DELL and bear the crackling sound of the music.

IS THER ANY FIX FOR IT FOR NOT LOOSING THE QUALITY OF "
"""THE INTEGRATED AUDIO CODECS 7.1 OF DELL """ WITH VISTA

The folder icon is a function of the desktop.ini (a hidden, system file)
inside the folder. Copy the desktop.ini from a "good" Music folder, from
another user, and paste it into your Music folder. You may be told that the
folder already has a desktop.ini; if so, choose replace.
