startling fan

Probably a stupid question from a newbie here, but my system (compaq
presario running XP, 500MB) has some secondary fan that kicks in from
within (I think) the hardrive when the resources are pushed. Now I
expect this is normal, yet it's so starting (makes me jump everytime)
that regular occurrance that I feel I have to question it. Is it
normal. It's not so loud, but annoying to expect it each time I have
more than two apps open. Thanks

You have to supply *details* about this computer. Laptop, desktop,
processor, separate video card or chipset video. The fact of a
secondary fan activating is of no consequence. User 'surprise' or
'annoyance' is not relevant.

It could be the thermal fan, that is turned on after a
threshold temperature has been reached. At what temperature
is the fan being activated? If it is unreasonably low, then
it might be possible to change the triggering temperature in
system bios setup. Mine is set at 60 deg C. for the mobo.

Very well. As mentioned in my post before it's a Compaq Presario, so a
desktop, Celeron CPU 2.66Ghz, 500MB and chipset video. Cheers.

Sounds like a fan that is set to start at a specific temperature. Seems
normal.

It often is normal, paticulaly in PC’s that you buy from Dell or PC
World and other places like that. I personaly find it rather amusing
when I’m using the college PC’s in my normal way (which is to have
lots of things open at once) and then it suderly starts making a noise
like an air consitionar (not a silent one that is).
