Cooling Fan

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop running XP home

My fan seems to come on quite a bit which is annoying as it's quite loud. It
comes on even when doing minor things like browsing the web

Since plugging in a broadband modem, it also seems to stay on

Is there a way to change the fan settings

The fan is controlled by the internal temperature of the Laptop. Shutting it
down will do nasty things, likely resulting in the purchase of a new
computer!
Sometimes adding a bit of space between the bottom of the laptop and
whatever its sitting on helps.
Adding the broadband connection just increased the loading on the laptop,
causing the temperature to rise.
