Hi,

I've been trying to find on my machine with Word 97 and on my wife's
machine with Word 2000, an option that, when Word is launched, will
cause it to come up with the document that was showing when I last
quit Word.

I'm looking for it because a friend of mine shutdown Word with a
document showing, and now, everytime he launches Word, it comes up
with that document showing. It seemed logical to try to find an
option that he may have set that causes that behavior.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Hi Terry,

There is a way to do that, which I'll get to in a minute, but that
isn't your friend's problem.

Your friend has gotten the text of that document save into his
Normal.dot template, so every new "blank" document has that text in
it. See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm
for the steps to fix it.

If you really do want to reopen the last document, make a new shortcut
to Word on the desktop. Right-click the shortcut and select
Properties. In the Target box in the properties dialog, at the end of
the existing entry, type a space and add

/mFile1

Click OK. That icon will always open Word to the most recent document,
the one numbered 1 on the File menu.

Many thanks for the info. The bad normal.dot was the problem.

My friend said to thank you profusely!

HEY! That's great! Don't recall where, but I keep seeing people
ask a question like that and never a positive response! KUDOS!

Hmm, wonder if that'd work for file1, file2, file3, etc.: That
would be handy at times when you want several files located in
different folders.
-- Any easy way to do that?

I can't find the source of that info:
-- Is it Word, Office, or XP sourced? I'd like to learn more.

I found the info: It's in Help and Support. Word Help has
"some" of the switches, but only XP seems to have all of them for
Word, including the /mfilename. Dunno what THAT'S about! MRU, I
suppose, but ... .

Pop

Thanks again for the tip!

Hi Pop,

Yes, it works for the other files, if there are that many in the
recently used list. But you can only use one of them in any given
shortcut. A better solution for multiple files is the Work menu
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WorkMenu.htm).

The Help topic "Customize how Word starts" explains about startup
switches, including the /m switch. There's more information at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=210565. The tricky bit is that the
"macro" named in the /m switch can be any Word command, and File1 is
the command to load the most recent document.

Hi!

Good suggestions that I think I'll be able to use. Thank you for
the veritable cornucopia of related links all about what I wanted
to know! I had experimented with the file1, file2 a bit, and
decided it would be useful, although not perfect, and the Work
Menu was completely new to me. Guess I have to go back to
learning the Help topics/contents again <g>.
In most situations, 9 files will be enough; the problem I have
is really that the files are, by necessity, in different folders
so 'dragging' over them doesn't help much. In one case though, I
can pretty easily get fifteen opened by using one manual drag, so
it's a big step forward for me. I've tried a macro to get them,
but t hat's clumsy and I never did get one to work out.
Yes, I noticed, and recorded, the caveats etc. that go along
with some of the things I captured.

Here's a minor OT question, and if you don't answer, that's fine:
IMO, MVPS.org is a pretty well kept "secret", though I don't
understand why. Do the server logs reflect a lot of activity, or
are they idling a lot of the time? Mostly just curious. I plan
to look for a source to see if there are any preferences for
linking to the ORG from one of the non-profit web sites I manage
(SPCA and HS Alumni) on Tripod.

Thanks much,

Pop

FWIW, you won't find anything in the Help file about the Work menu. For some
reason, it's almost entirely undocumented.

As for word.mvps.org, it is very heavily trafficked; even Microsoft's Word
User Assistance pages link to our articles there.

I'm a frequent visitor and occasional contributor to the site, but I
don't have anything to do with the operations side. A note to
(e-mail address removed) might get you the information you want.

As for linking to the site, each article carries a "Terms of Use" link
to http://word.mvps.org/TermsofUse.htm that explains how. Anyone is
welcome to link to the articles; we don't permit direct copying or
rehosting of pages. We'll be happy to have you spread the Word. :)

If you use Google to search for Word FAQ or Word help it comes up the MVP
site comes up. It is referenced in most of the sites about Word that I've
seen.

You won't find much about the Work menu in help. I think it has been pretty
much undocumented since Word 3 or 4. (I believe it predates templates!)
