This may be the wrong forum, but here goes

I clicked on a Word file and MSWord failed to start. I was then taken
to the MS update site and I searched for updates.

I found two updates:
1 For the Power Point Viewer
2. Office XP Service Pack 3

Bearing in mind that my problem is with Word, and that my OS is Vista,
are either of these updates likely to help.

Thanks

If you have Office XP, maybe.

OFFICE XP is not supported on Vista.

Office XP was designed for Windows 98,SE and ME.

Read : It may work, but it isn't designed to work with that OS.

Office 2003 and 2007 are the only supported Suites on Vista.

MS Word failed to start because you don't have MS Word installed on your
computer most likely..

And if you do not feel like investing so much in an Office suite, you can
get the open source Open Office for free. It is not quite up to MS Office
standards, but it will enable you to open and work with MS Word files..

More than likely you don't have Word installed.
Did you install Office XP? If not, then Office XP SP3
does not apply to your situation.

As Mike Hall suggested, Open Office is free if you want to
do that. Personally, I feel the Microsoft Office Suite 2003
or 2007 to be superior to anything else.

If all you need to do is read Word documents and not
create them, then you can use the Word Viewer.

There's also an update for Word Viewer;

Another update if you wish to read the new Office 2007 formats.

Lastly, there is an Excel Viewer and a PowerPoint Viewer

Excel Viewer;

PowerPoint Viewer 2007;

I think about covers it.

Word is not part of Vista or XP; never was. If you want to read Word docs,
you'll need to install some app (such as Office) that can do so.

Assuming you have MS Word installed, it is possible the Office XP
update will help.
The viewer is for Power Point and unrelated to Word.
Note: You may not have Office XP installed, but the Service Pack
applies if you have any components of Office installed such as Word,
Excel, any of the free viewers etc.
It is unlikely you would be offered a Service pack if no supported
products are installed.
Reinstalling MS Word may resolve the issue.

Further questions should be directed to a Word or Office newsgroup:
http://aumha.org/nntp.htm
Post details such as exact message when word fails to open.

Thanks for responding

No, I don't have XP, just Vista 32 bit installed

You have not yet learned to identify programs.
Office XP is a separate program that can be installed in Windows XP or Windows Vista.
Word is part of Office (any version)
If you were offered an update for Office XP you may have that software installed.
Now
Do your have a Word link in the START menu?
If not, you may not even have the Word Program on your computer. It does not come free with Windows
Vista.

If you can't answer these questions, it is time to hire a tutor.

Technically, Office 2000 and Office XP are "supported".

While I think Office 2003 and 2007 are the best
choices to use on Vista, Microsoft does say Vista
supports Office XP. Exactly what "support" means
can be tricky to understand. There are some quirks
in using Office versions before 2003 on Vista, no doubt.

Microsoft confuses the issue by saying Office 2000
and Office XP are "supported". They should have said
something like you did;
"It may work, but it isn't designed to work with that OS."
Personally, I've come to like Office 2007.
But, Office 2003 is so much faster and more
responsive on Vista.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932087
This article describes the versions of Microsoft Office that are supported on Windows Vista.

Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, and the 2007 Microsoft
Office suites are all supported on Windows Vista. The 2007 Office suites were extensively
tested on Windows Vista for best compatibility.

Because Office 2000 and Office XP are in Extended Support, there have been no fixes for issues
that occur when these products are run on Windows Vista.

Because these versions of Office are in Extended Support, there will no more service packs for
them.

The 2007 Office suites were designed to run on Windows Vista. Therefore, the 2007 Office suites
are the recommended and best versions of Office for this platform.

If an update that was offered you was for "Office XP Service Pack 3,"
you seem to be getting confused by the "XP" in that name. It does
*not* refer to Windows XP, but to one of the older versions of
Microsoft Office (which includes Word). So, since SP3 was offered you,
presumably you have Word XP (aka Word 2002) installed as part of
Office XP. If that's the case and you don't have SP3 installed, you
should go ahead and install it.

However, that almost certainly has nothing to do with your problem.

First of all, start by verifying that you have Word installed (if you
have a new computer, and expected it to come with Word, be aware that
no version of Windows does).

If Word is installed, what version is it? Go to Help | About.

Then, where did you get this Word file, and what extension does it
have (.doc or .docx)? If it came by E-mail and is .docx, it was
created by Word 2007, and your Word XP can't read it natively. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en
or http://tinyurl.com/ykums3
and download and install the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats"

If it's a .doc file and you have Word XP installed, right-click on any
doc file and choose "Open with." Choose Microsoft Word and check the
box "Always use this program..."

Sascha Jazbec, you are dead wrong. Office XP works just fine in Windows Vista and is supported.

ok, sorry... but that is really amazing, when Beta-testing Vista Microsoft
always said that Office 03 would be the only one together with all new
releases that will work/and be supported on the Vista Platform. And I think
everybody would have understood that policy, thinking of how old Office xp
is ..

But ok, now I know better - thanks for the info. -

Sidenote : but what I know for sure is that Office 97 won't even install
properly under Vista while MS BOB does better than on 3.11 ;)

Whatever is the source of your information it is incorrect.
Office 2003 is supported and performs well on windows Vista.

An excellent, admirable, compact piece of reference. Very good.

I think what the original poster did was to copy the exec or most likely the
MSword folder to a Vista partition and expected it to work. No way.

You could have also added that a lot of stuff can be viewed in WordPad like
csv files but I do not think .doc files can be digested by it.

Thanks for all the advice. I will check out the links and take on
board what has been said.
