Starting the computer - Safe Mode problem

My friend's computer is having a problem starting up the computer, it ends up
with the list of Safe Mode, we have tried 'em all and ended up with the blue
screen says:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new harddware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation, ask your hardware of software manufacturer for
any windows updates you might need.

if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you
need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer,
press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80B55E30, 0XC0000032, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)"

The computer is Window XP Home Edition, 80BG HDD, 128mb RAM and Celeron
processor. My friend added MSN Messager this is how my friend ended up with
this error problem.

I'm guessing it has to do with Window XP software b/c there's no new
hardware installed.

Is there a solution that I can attempt to repair the software?

Here is a Knowledge Base article about your friend's Stop Error:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=297185

In addition to what it says there, since your friend's computer is probably
elderly I would also run a hard drive diagnosis using a diagnostic utility
downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. You will make a bootable cd or
floppy with the file you download. Then boot with your created media and do
a thorough test. If the hard drive fails any physical tests, replace it.

I very much doubt that installing MSN Messenger caused the issue.

Malke,

Thanks for the link. I actually found that link via Google using
"unmountable_boot_volume" and had a bit of struggle at first then finally I
realized I need to adjust the boot sequence in BIOS, which I did. At this
moment, I'm now showing Recovery Console and is repairing it right now.

Perhaps the desktop is old, I don't know how old is the motherboard but the
harddrive itself is about either 1 or 2 year olds.

Suprisingly that my friend doesn't have WinXP Home CD but I have WinXP Pro
CD and is actually using it to make a boot to open Recovery Console to fix it.

Here's the question... you said "I would also run a hard drive diagnosis
using a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website." Do
you mean desktop mftr or the software mftr? or harddrive's mftr? I'm a bit
confused.

Thanks for helping...

Latest update: I finally fixed it and was able to get through to WinXP os
now. Now I noticed one problem... there are two HDDs (80GB and 4GB). On "My
Computer" displayed one HDD (4GB). I need to find out how to switch the HDD
back to 80 GB HDD.

Hmm.
