Starting from cd

A friends computer is down, and I can't get it to boot
from his XP CD. What keys does one have to hit in order
to get to that level. The computer has a corrupted
hal.dll file, but I need access to the drive to be able
to re-load it for him.

Your assistance is appreciated.
 
Go to the BIOS (usually hitting F2, F12 or Delete at start up) and set the
boot order to have CD Rom before Hard drive
