hal.dll

Hi

I am getting the following issues on a XP operating system.

HAL.DLL file is missing or corrupt.

What I did so far is,
I got into the recovery mode booting off of the XP cd.
Ran BOOTCFG /REBUILD, still unable to boot up.
Extracted the HAL.DLL file to my C drive.
But I am unable to copy HAL.DLL to my I386 folder.
Keep getting ACCESS DENIED.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mike Cat

That's not the way to fix this error. The error message is misleading;
you don't want to replace hal.dll. Boot.ini is damaged. Here are the
steps to use (credit the late MVP Alex Nichol):

From the Recovery Console

Use
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot.ini
DEL C:\boot.ini
to delete the bad one
BootCfg /Rebuild

to search for Windows installations and make a new one.
