starting computer takes ages!

Hi when I first got my new comp it would start up really fast but now the
desktop wallpaper comes up but it takes ages and ages for the icons to
appear. I have unchecked all background processes in the startup tab in
system config, but it made no difference. Can anyone help? Im worried
something could be wrong. Thanks.
