Started to updated USB & now USB doesn't work

OK my system only has USB & a new USB2 device I recently bought automatically
started to update the USB 2.0 system, now none of my input devices work in
Windows XP.
I've now read article 813139 & it says:
"Note If you are using a USB keyboard and a mouse input device, Microsoft
does not recommend that you update the USB 2.0 host controller driver by
means of Device Manager. If you do this, the keyboard and mouse do not
function, and you cannot control the system or safely restart the computer."

I can get the recovery console up, but have no idea how to fix the system to
get my keyboard & mouse to work again.

Anyone offer any help? (just wish I had remote access switched on!)

That article is wrong,as a matter of fact,xp SP1 and now SP2 which includes
SP1 updates usb to 2.0,and even though the updated software is downloaded
to youre computer,usually its not installed.The only way to install is thru
device
mgr,R.click the usb controller,select update,which at this time usb has an
exclamation mark on it.You need to update thru device mgr.Also,if youre board
is intel based,you need to install thier chipset installation utility for
usb.

Hi Treeman, well that is set as on boot up my USB kybd & mouse work - they
stop working as soon as Windows starts up.

Andrew E, yup understand that, but as my machine is USB only, none of my
input devices work in windows, so I can't right click anything.

I'm wondering if there is a service I can alter from the recovery console to
get USB back online when windows runs.

One other thing - I've been searching high & low for a PS2 interface card to
plug into my machine - can I find one? - can I ******!
Stoopid machines with no native PS2!

I don't see any mention of trying to start in Safe Mode. Have
you tried to boot into Safe Mode? If you can, you might be able
to use System Restore to take your computer back to a time
before the problem appeared. You might want to take a look at

See if you can boot into Safe Mode first and run System Restore
from within Windows. If unsuccesful, try Safe Mode with command
prompt.

I have tried Safe mode once already & USB control wasn;t working- I'll try

I just installed a pci card with 5 usb 2.0 ports on it. I done absolutely
nothing and it installed itself.

Tried your suggestion, but unfortunately even in Safe (with or without
command) mode the USB drivers don't work. So no keyboard available to run
system restore Shame you can't run it from the recovery console because
the usb system works fine there).

JIm, thanks for the reply, but that's not my problem. I have a totally USB
machine - no native PS2, so when the USB system decided to go awol when
windows runs, I have no means to recovery. I'm still looking for a PCI PS"
interface card :|

Here's what I would call a longshot:
In Recovery Console, run the Listsvc command.
Is there an entry towards the bottom of that list called
Usbehci USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller Minport Driver?
If it's listed, you might want to try entering Disabel Usbehci
in Recovery Console and see if it disables the driver for USB
2.0.
That may restore the functionality of your current USB mouse
and keyboard.

You might also consider trying to use a USB 2.0 mouse and/or
keyboard to see if they work when you boot into Windows. Then
you could try to run System Restore.

If none of these suggestions help, you may need to run a repair
installation of Windows XP. Take a look here for the procedure:
