I want my normal.dot to not use a text frame at startup.

I delete the frame, save normal dot and then re-start.....it looks ok (no
frame)...I type some text....still ok...then delete the text and the little
empty frame reappears! How do I get rid of this but have access to use them
on the rare occasions that I might need frames?

It is possible that the frame has been saved to a paragraph style. The
first style to check is the Normal style, which, by default, is
applied to the empty paragraph in blank documents. In the Styles and
Formatting pane, right-click Normal, and choose to Modify it. Word
displays the Modify Style dialog box. Click the Format button, and
then click Frame. Click No Frame, and then confirm the settings by
clicking OK. In the Modify Style dialog box, check the "Add to
template" option, and then close the dialog box. Later, if you are
prompted to save the attached template, be sure to click Yes.

If you fail to find a style which has frame formatting, you may want
to take a look at this article instead:

Text at the top of the page is unaccountably indented
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/UnaccountablyIndented.htm

Note that if you need a frame in the future, you can insert it by
clicking the Insert Frame button on the Forms toolbar.
