when starting up. The screen displays checking files on disc d to skip this
scan press any key within 3 seconds if i dont it runs through the scan
sequence where as before my pc just started up sraight away

Is the computer shutting down normally? Try shutting down a different way as
a test. Cntl-Alt-Delete and then click shutdown on the file menu. Now see
if you reboot properly.

Do you get a popup window saying something about recovering from a serious
error after the scan?
