start up & registry confusion

I am having some confusion about editing the reg to add items to start up.
I find i can edit this area......
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\policies\
Explorer\Run
The above is per Rick selbys site

or this area.....
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
this one from elder geek.

I have also gone into the MMC group policy area for stand alone snap in
stuff......

can anyone explain which ones are for what? I am confused and haven't been
able to make any of them work.... I did have success simply placing items in
the start up folder but would like to understand the reg methods. There
appear to be several startup folders also!
Thanks

thanks for the links Ramesh....
i looked them over but still not sure why there are two separate Run
policies and which one I would add to. Although it says I cannot add to the
Legacy list anyway>>>>only disable..
most confusing :)

Thanks D for knowing how to ask the questions and Ramesh for giving the
answers. I've been looking for some time.

This one is hardly, if ever used.

To add to the confusion, there's the same key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. The
difference is that HKCU will apply to the user that's logged in while HKLM
will apply to Windows as a whole.
I have also gone into the MMC group policy area for stand alone snap in

Another way of doing it. How many ways can you skin a cat?

The links Ramesh provided will help you understand the Run, RunOnce keys.
The registry (the key you mentioned above) is the standard way of adding
items to startup.

There are ~10 locations where you can add the startup application.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] affects
the current user only.

The exact difference between the two, may be the priority of the application
start.

thanks to all for very helpful posts... I will persevere.
I am finding my way around.... outlook express is proving to be a pain ....
I am probably typing it's location incorrectly... it seems to call itself
"msmin" or i am finding the wrong target to stick in the reg.
Thanks again
