Start-up question

Every few days I get a pop-up from Win Patrol (a kind of watchdog
program I have) that basically says it has detected a new start-up
program that's named: %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k  
Is this something I should allow or deny?
Is it a program I need, and if so what does it do? Thanks!

Hi,

You can allow it. That is a system recovery setting that allows the system
to create a dump file for the memory contents. This is done when the system
fails, and can be used to determine the cause of the stop error. The
behavior is defined in the Control Panel/System/Advanced tab, click on
startup and recovery settings, then look in the system failure block.

Dumprep.exe = Windows Error Reporting Dump Reporting Tool

You can disable this....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Under Startup and
Recovery | Settings button | Under System Failure | UNCheck: Write an
event to the system log | Under Write debugging information | Select (None)
| OK | Apply | OK

Write an event to the system log = dumprep 0-k

If you have other problems, then dumprep 0-k is automatically enabled.

If you have Error Reporting enabled, this entry may show up for the first
time after your PC has experienced a Windows XP "dump" crash, or an Office
XP or Internet Explorer 6 crash where you were prompted about sending the
crash results to Microsoft.

To disable Error Reporting....
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Error Reporting button | Disable error reporting

Also.
Start | Run | Type: sevices.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Error Reporting Service | Apply | OK

Thanks for the speedy reply and yes, I did get an error notice right
before that pop-up, but I wasn't sure if it was related or not....I
wrote down what it said and this is what it told me....

On the first line it said:

BCCode:1000008e BCP1:C000005 BCP2:20646156 EE13AA4

And on a second line it had:

BCP4:000000 OSVer:5_1_2600 SP:1_0Product:768_1

Is there something wrong with my system? I have gotten that notice two
or three times in the last month or so....
