I need help finding what programs automatically start up on my Win XP and how to turn off ones I don't want to start.

First, go to the individual program's setup options and see if there is a
startup option and disable those that offer the option. For those that don't
offer the option, go to Start>Run and type "msconfig"(no quotes) and on the
"Startup" tab, you will see check boxes to disable start items. The entries
are rather cryptic and some are difficult to recognize. The link below will
help you with what most of them are. None of the programs listed are
necessary for XP to run but, be sure you don't disable your firewall and AV
programs. Also, you may have programs for your sound or video card, etc.
that you would want to run.

Try doing the following:
Go to Start | Run.
Enter in: %userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
A directory will open which contains all the shortcuts in the startup folder
belonging to the user ID you are logged in as.
You can now delete whatever program you wish.

Now go to Start | Run again.
This time enter in: %allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
This directory contains all the shortcuts to programs for all users.

The above instructions are assuming you are an Administrator user on the
machine. If you are not setup as an Administrator user, then you will not
be able to remove any of these shortcuts from any Startup directory.
