I have Windows XP and AVG (paid version) plus Skype. Both AVG and
Skype require my computer to go online in the boot-up process and I
don't want this. I would like both of these programs to prompt me.
I don't know how to change them.

Can someone please help? I am reasonably computer-literate, but by
no means an expert.

Thank you.

Remove Skype from your Start up folder, or amend Skype properties to not
start on boot up.
AVG is designed, as is any AV app, to run on startup. It should'nt 'require'
you to go online but nag you when the sys boots.
Attempting to remove AVG from starting at boot could cause problems.

You can probably avoid the AVG connection but it is risky.

Open AVG Control Center and select the Scheduler. Delete the Update
entry from the Scheduled Tasks list. This will require you to
manually check for antivirus updates and it exposes you to possible
infections if you forget to check for the updates manually.

Good luck
