Win XP Home Edition, Dell PC.

Was upgrading Norton Systems Works when PC stopped responding and was
re-booted, tried to used Norton Go Back.

Problem I now have is PC will not reboot, it goes through all the bios
checks then I get blue screen with:

Error 'unmountable_boot_volume' and I have to re-start.

I have tried starting in Safe Mode, tried using 'last known good
configuration', but simply cannot get past this screen.

I'm really concerned that I will have to re-install XP which I really do not
want to do, can anyone give me any help to overcome this.

many thanks
phil

Your Unmountable_Boot_Volume error indicates some sort of a problem
with the hard drive, either with the drive itself or with the data
content. The second parameter value that you reported (0xC0000185)
is not the one that normal indicates a data problem so it may be a
problem with drive itself.

If you know the name of the hard drive manufacturer then you can go to
their website and download their diagnostic utility and run that to
see if there is a problem with the drive itself.

Do you have an actual Windows XP installation CD or is yours a Dell
"System Recovery" disk? If it is an actual installation CD then you
can boot your computer with that and choose the Repair (Recovery
Console) option from the menu. When it stops at the Command Prompt
(C:\>) enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

Another option would be to use the multiple diskette Windows XP boot
images which you can download from
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=310994
Boot your computer with these diskettes and when it stops at the A:\>
prompt enter the above command.

That may or may not repair your disk to a usable state. If it does
not then your next option is probably to do a reinstall. If you have
an actual XP Installation CD then you can do a Repair Install as per
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck

Ron,
thank you for the reply and assistance.

chkdsk /p & fixboot rectified the problem so we have kids PC working for
Xmas - phew!!!

One question though, do I actually need Norton progs like Norton Go Back, as
XP offers system restore, which seems to be exactly the same?

My personal opinion is that I would never allow any Norton product on
any computer that I have control over.

Good luck
