Start up problem?

I've just switched from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro and one item in
my startup folder often fails to start when I boot the computer, I get
a "LOAD Device Driver Fail" message and the hardware monitor fails to
start. Everything else starts up OK. I'm running the exact same
software as I did in Win2k and never had this problem there?

Any ideas?

TIA

No idea really, but it sounds like an incompatible driver - you might try
unplugging the monitor, boot without it, shut down, plug it in and then boot
again. Windows might then load its own driver.

Good luck

Hi,

You need to tell us which program or routine it is.

It's Abit's hardware monitor, "Winbond Hardware Doctor".

All it does is report fan speeds and cpu/MB temperatures.

None of the normal trouble shooting suggestions help as this is one
that won't start. When I installed XP the Hardware Doctor was one of
the very first programs installed, strangely enough, as I added more
programs that appear in the systray it started to load at startup every
now and then??? It still fails 90% of the time but when it was by
itself in the systray it failed every time???

Thanks, but that didn't help. I wonder if a driver that's OK in
Windows 2000 could cause a problem in Windows XP?

I think you've answered your own question. Get rid of the Hardware
Doctor. There are lots of other motherboard monitor programs. Try a
different one that is designed for XP.

But it works in Win2000, there's no reason it shouldn't work in XP.
I'd MUCH rather get rid of Windows XP, I'm having dozens of problems
with it that never occurred in Win2k and I suspect I'm gonna fight it
about two more days before formatting the HD and putting Windows 2000
back on.

Your assumption that because it works in Win2k it must work in WinXP is
incorrect. Although both operating systems are based on the NT kernel,
they are different. You may be having problems with XP because your
hardware is older and the drivers for the motherboard, etc. are for
Win2k and not XP. When you switch operating systems, you a) should do a
clean install; i.e., format the drive and install the new operating
system; b) install drivers for all your hardware that were written for
the new operating system, starting with ones for your motherboard. If
this doesn't please you, then certainly uninstall XP and replace it
with whatever os you like. Win2k is a fine operating system - I still
have it running on one of my boxen.

I'm writing this in Windows 2000. It seems the change in the startup
is what's killing my Hardware Doctor but I'm unwilling to NOT have it
run at startup. Nor am I willing to figure out the failure of Windows
update to recognize installed updates so it won't install them over and
over nor am I willing to have to reboot every time the screen saver
comes on because I lose the internet connection every time the screen
saver comes on... I'm really wondering if I've a defective disk? I
installed it again (clean install both times) and had all the same
problems. I had wanted WinXP to match the newly acquired laptop but
the laptop's getting formatted tomorrow and Win2k installed!

My curiosity was killing me so I installed WinXP Home Edition from the
Laptop (yeah, I know it's illegal but I had to find out!) and
everything works perfectly, the Hardware Doctor starts with no
problems, the Windows Update is working perfectly, don't know about the
having to reboot when it come out of screensaver mode yet.

Now the question is do I buy a legal copy of XP Home for this computer
or do I replace my copy of XP Pro (I planned to get one anyway for the
laptop) which, I suspect, may be a bad disk not installing correctly or
do I revert the laptop back to Windows 2000 along with the desktop?

Don't know yet, I'll think about it for a day or so....

Be modern. Go with XP. You won't regret it.

Currently formatting the harddrive on the laptop, XP isn't modern, it's
a huge step backwards for what I want and need.
