start up problem win XP

I have an HP laptop running Win XP professional edition. It's been running
fine for the past few weeks.

All of a sudden, now, when I turn the computer on and it starts to "start
up" I get a menu with the standard choices of starting in safe mode, safe
mode with command prompt, normal windos start up, last known good
configuration etc. Just like if I were to start up "tapping the F8 key".

I've tried selecting "last good config", "safe mode", cmd prompt etc. but
regardless of my choice. the system "loops" back to the menu of start up
choices.

I was hoping to get windows restarted somehow and then try to run system
restrore, but Win XP won't load.

What can I do? Thanks in adavnce for your assistance!

Most HP systems do not ship with a Windows XP CD. The setup files are usually on a hidden
partition, and recovery is usually done by pressing the F10 key when you power on the
system. If your HP system is one that uses the above method, try it, and see what
happens. If it works, fine. If it doesn't, and you are still under warranty, get with HP
support, and HP will ship you Recovery CDs. Never purchase a system that doesn't come
with an actual Windows XP CD. Even if the Windows XP CD is OEM, it's better than having
setup files on a hidden partition, or System Recovery CDs. I do not recommend HP systems
to my clients. They are to this decade, what Packard Bell systems were in the 1990's.
After the class action law suits, Packard Bell no longer sells PCs in the U.S...
