i get the following error message and symptoms, please help me get my machine
back up:
During the day whilst I was at work the PC froze. The only way to reactivate
it was to turn the power off at the wall. I now have the following message
which i cannot get past.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully.
A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, or was automatically shut down to
protect your files and folders, choose last known configeration to revert to
the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or
because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what
caused the problem, chose start windows normally.
Safe Mode
Safe mode with Netwoking
Safe mode with command prompt

Last known good configeration(your most recent settings that worked)

Start windows normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Seconds until winndows start: 29

The computer has now frozen after several attempts to restart.

I have check I have no loose board or broken fans or excessive dust and have
made sure all connections are good.

If I take an old MSDOS boot disc the system boots only to b drive nothing
else shows.

I can get an XP boot disc made but I then need to know what if anything
needs to be done next - please help.

Boot to the XP startup disk, and Recovery Console, to run the command: CHKDSK /R
