start up disk

I recently installed XP over ME with much difficulty. Puter would not boot up
due to a bad file. During a couple of long sessions with MS techs I finally
got it working but still had to go to back to the techs later because it
wouldn't shut down. Not shutting down was a mouse/keyboard conflict. However
during all this melee the tech had me go in and change some options in the
startup while trying different approaches to the problems. I don't recall the
changes which were supposed to be temporary but right now I don't think it's
set up to look at floppy A first. Before if I tried to reboot with a disk in
A drive the puter would advise me to remove the disk and hit any key. Now on
startup it ignores any disk in A drive. Unless XP is different, I always
assumed The computer checked A drive first on a startup.
Thanks

This has nothing to do with Windows XP but everything with your
BIOS. Check its setting for the first boot device!

While an upgrade from WinME to WinXP is supported, you would
have saved yourself a lot of trouble by doing a clean installation of
WinXP. The two OSs are radically different and an upgrade involves
so many compromises that the result is often less than satisfactory.

Well if you need to get the Puter to check for Floppy on Bootup try to Tap
F2 to get to the BIOS and change your Boot Options and set the floppy as your
first drive/Boot Option, then the HDD. When the computer boot, it will look
for a Floppy and if the floppy isn't bootable will warn you to remove it, if
the floppy bootable wil go through the process and boot from the Floppy, that
my understanding.
Most Computers Manufacturer these days step-by-step are going off the idea
of producing the machine with Floppy drive, most machine now shipped with
CD/DVD drives, as the floppy capcity with these days (
Media,photos,Apps..etc..) are in great size and the standard of 1.44 MB
Floppy, it doesn't fit to the huge size of the applications that run on the
computer nowdays.
HTH.
Please let us know.

Ok Nass and Pegasus,
Here what the boot screen looks like.
1 BOOT DEVICE=ATAPI CDROM
2 BOOT DEVICE=ARMD-FDD
3 BOOT DEVICE=IDE-HDD
4 BOOT DEVICE=DISABLED

I assume I change number 1 to floppy and move the rest down keeping them in
that order but I'll wait on instructions.
Thanks

This is correct. The manual that came with your PC gives you
full details about this process.

XP does not require a floppy boot as all boot requirements are contained on
the XP CD..

Having the hard drive boot first makes more sense as ultimately, that is
what you want the system to do, and it saves time at boot up..

The boot order should be Hard drive 0, followed by CD-ROM (in the event that
the hard drive fails, the system will look for the bootable XP CD), and then
the FDD as a last resort..

1.. BOOT DEVICE=IDE-HDD
2.. BOOT DEVICE=ATAPI CDROM
3.. BOOT DEVICE=ARMD-FDD
4.. BOOT DEVICE=DISABLED

That Right Procedure, I agree with Pegasus and Mike, but if you have
intention to use a Floppy in the future you will needto change the Boot
Options Procedure to start to look first for a Floppy Disk.
I don't know why you are asking about it, did you try to boot from a floppy
and it didn't boot or what you would like to achieve.

If you want to use the Floppy as your First Boot Option, your Boot Options
will Look like this:
1st Boot Device [1st Floppy Drive]
2nd Boot Device [ IDE- HDD ]
3rd Boot Device [ ATAPI-CDROM ]
4th Boot Device [ Disabled ]

HTH.

OK guys and gals, I'll leave everything as is. Not too knowledgeable. I just
assumed you needed the floppy startup disk to get the CD drive up and running
in case of an emergency. Now I wonder why we bother to make a startup disk.
