Start up and shutdown

Over the past year start up and shutdown of the windows xp operating system
has become very slow (like 3 to 4 minutes slow). Tried removing the junk from
the start menu and doing all the normal things to improve performance but to
no avail. Anyone got any ideas on how I can speed things up other than
threatening to throw the base unit out of closed 2nd floor window?

Attacking the Start Menu with a chain saw is not the best way
to address a slow start-up. Too many users misuse the Msconfig
Tool.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message.
This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report into the
message.
Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. What is the Total,
the Commit Charge and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space.

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

Try the utility CCleaner at www.ccleaner.com, or run the Windows disk
cleanup utility.

Removing shortcuts from the start menu isn't going to do much, as you've
discovered.
