Start up and Shut down problems

I recently wiped/reformated/reloaded Windows XP Pro. sp2. Unfortunetly I
didn't reset my boot order to first, A:floppy, second HHD, third, CD-ROM. Now
every time I start my computer, the screen says,
"Select O. S. to start...
M. S. Windows XP
M. S. Windows.... blaa, blaa, blaa.
At shut down, Windows gets as far as "Windows Shutting Down" then stalls. I
have to cut the power to finish shutting down. I have tried all the steps in
Windows Start up and Shutdown Troubleshooter but that didn't help. Is there
any way to fix this without going back and starting from scratch? If anyone
has any ideas I would appreciate your imput. TY, johnalangmi

You can set your boot order in the Bios. Have you reloaded all the
WinUpdates since SP2?

Rich,
Am in the process of downloading updates now. Having some difficulties with
the downloads, will finish and see what happens. Hopefully there will be
something in them to solve the problem. Thanks, johnalangmi

You can remove the duplicate Windows XP boot options by editing the boot.ini
file. Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery >
Settings > Edit. This will open the boot.ini file. In the [operating systems]
section, delete all lines EXCEPT for the first (they are probably equal).
Leave only one line and the boot menu shoud disappear.

I hope this helps.

Eric, I'm really nervous about messing around with this stuff so hopefully
you can clear this up for me. I opened everything as instructed. This is what
I found,

Boot

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)partition(3)\windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional"/noexecute=optin /fastdetect
c:\="Microsoft Windows

Which lines do you recommend I delete? johnalangmi
