start programs, then close right away

Something very odd. I have a friends computer here and when I click on any
number of programs, they start up for a few seconds then they close on their
own a couple seconds later.

IE 6 is just one program.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I did run a virus program and found lots of bad stuff on it, but got rid of
all of it.

Try that scan one more time but this time do it in safe mode. Here's a bunch
of free tools. More than one cleaner (and scanning with various products)
might bring this around.
