What's the procedure for deleting items from the
'Startup' list? I've done the Remove, using Add/
Remove the program, and deleted the HP name
everywhere I could find it including Registry...
and 3 items remain in the Startup list......

Thanks.

Some of the items your removing could be very imporant, especially on a
laptop system. Those are memory-resident programs that allow your hardware
functions, like the built-in wireless on/off switch and more. Be careful not
to cripple your system.

Otherwise, a good proceedure would be to not delete any file or registry key
until you disable something in MSCONFIG for a while. If you have any
trouble, you can boot into safe mode (at a minimum, since safe mode doesn't
load ANYthing on that tab) and re-enable it. After you're sure you don't
need it, then consider other more permanant action.

You should see where it starts by looking at the Location column in
Msconfig-Startup tab. What does it say there for each?

First, why are you wanting to remove them? Windows needs a *host* of
programs to run when it starts up. It's dangerous to remove things
unless you know specifically that they are not needed.

Assuming the items in question are truly not needed, just uncheck
them. Then when you get the nag message at the next book, check the
box labeled "Don't tell me this again" (or words to that effect).

If the programs have been uninstalled, and their entries still
appear, and it bothers you enough, you'll need to edit the Registry.
Look for keys of "Run" and "Run-".

Thank you, Shawn. The items I'm interested in getting
rid of are vestigial, left over from when I had an HP
3-in-one that I installed, tried, uninstalled, and got
rid of. I have no HP hardware or software but I have
3 HP items in the StartUp list. I removed HP from Prog
Files and ADD/Remove Programs and the registry keys. Now
how do I get them out of the StartUp list?

Alan, they refer to HP items that aren't there any
more, such as in Program Files. How do I remove dead-end
items from the Startup list is my question.

Stan, of course I can do that, but I don't like disabling
a caution that might really have some meaning sometime.

Stan, the programs are uninstalled, I removed all HP from
Registry....I unchecked them in Startup but it annoys me to
still see them there. Is there no procedure for removing them?

Bill,

I know what your question is but I need your answer so I can tell you
where to find the item.
What is in the Location column for each?

What Alan meant was the Location column indicates where the item is loading from (Start Menu, Startup folder or the Registry).

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This gives a little more info about where things are loading from, and the Help includes some basic information about how to remove items.

Okay, Alan, I have these three:

HPAiO Device.................... Common Startup
Hewlett Packard Recorder ..........Startup
hpgs2wnd...........................Software\Microsoft\
Windows\Current Version\Run

Those are columns 1 and 3; I can give you the middle
one (Command) as well if you need it.

I do hope you've heeded the above, which several other also tried to
tell you.

It never has yet.

You quoted what I said. Try reading it, and you'll see that I
answered your question.

If you've already unchecked the HP items on the Startup tab in
msconfig, you can do the following to remove the entries.

Courtesy of Kelly Theriot, MS-MVP
Line 148, right hand column, Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig
Startup and Selective
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you prefer to do this manually, start the Registry Editor
(Start -> Run -> regedit.exe) and navigate to the following
locations,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder

You should find subkeys for the unchecked items listed under
one or both of these keys. Simply right click the subkey and
select Delete from the menu.

Good luck

No, I don't need anything but column 3 as that is where it tells you
the start location.

The first is started from a shortcut in the Common Startup folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

The second is started from a shortcut in the Startup folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

The third is started from the Registry under the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Okay, Alan....I found the subkeys, and deleted them,
and now the obsolete items are gone from the
Startup menu, and all is well. Very easy, and thank you again.
