This problem appears to have no solution. I have posted
all over the internet with only a few ideas on how to
resolve & none have worked. More than a week ago IE6 would
not open after an update from VirusScan. Never a problem
with VS before. Dell tech had me do a sfc scan. At that
time tech had me disable system restore. I do not have
restore points. IE is ok. Now I cannot open a variety of
start menu programs including system tools, Wordpad, some
admin.tools & several Windows games. These programs are
accessible thru other programs. Their icons have been
replaced with a white file icon. Right clicking properties
tells me "This is not a valid shortcut." On the tab there
is no OPEN option. I am not getting any error messages.
Dell & I have did all the usual things including safemode
to open these files to no avail. I have did a command
prompt assoc.lnk(?) with no results. Dell now recommends a
total reinstall. This is not an option at this point.
Anyone with a suggetion or idea?

Doesn't anyone have an idea or two on how to resolve this
issue?

Visit this page:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Download and use the fix for the EXE and LNK associations.

NOTE: Damage to these two file types is usually an indication that the
system has been infected with a virus. Be sure to do a full system scan
with an up to date antivirus program to make sure the system is clean.

If you suspect that your antivirus program may be affected by a virus and
currently unreliable, try one of the online scanners:

Fixes did not work. Scanned at Trendmicro, no virus.
Thanks all the same. I suppose I'll have to do a
reinstall. Look forward to that! Horror stories I've heard.
