Start Menu Trouble

Hello from frustrationland...

My problem:

I can access my Start Menu, but can't do much else with it - I have to go
into Windows Explorer. I get no context menus, etc, (including My Documents,
My Music, etc. and the stuff in All Programs). Then, for the coup de grace,
when I try to 'pin' apps to the Start Menu, I get a good-ol' Data Execution
Prevention error message whenever I open the start menu after doing so; then,
Dr. Watson does its thing, and explorer.exe restarts.

As it turns out, the apps actually 'pin' okay, and work, but I can't move
them or anything else, including getting any context menus (like with the
rest of the Start Menu. And I can delete my 'pins' only from within Windows
Explorer via the context menu ('Unpin from Start Menu').

So far, everything else seems to be working okay, both Windows and my
applications, but how long?

I have Service Pack 3 installed, anyone know of any issues/conflicts that
would cause the problem I am having?

I also recently installed the JRE version 6...any known issues there?

The frustration part is that I have tried just about everything I can think
of, including uninstalling stuff, disabling numerous shell extensions, and
nada.

Here is the Error event from the event viewer; I get this every time I get
the DEP error, and explorer.exe restarts:

Watson that appears just above the Application error event in the events log:*

Ah, yes, now all works well. Thank you very much. Why that would give me a
DEP error when I tried to 'pin' who knows, but at least I know the DEP
feature works! Again, thank you.
