Start Menu Slow

I'm running Windows XP 5.1 (using classic menu structure)

When I click on the Start Button -- it pops up quickly -- but only displays
the first default items. I have customized the start menu and have added
about 6-8 additional items above the "Programs" entry. It displays upon the
"pop up" but is blank for about 10-15 seconds before the actual items on the
menu display. From there it runs fine -- the supplemental menus run a
little slow -- but not bad (1-3 second delay).

Any suggestions?

I have recently defragged, have a currently updated anti-virus running, have
11 Gigs of a 40 Gig drive free and have 256 MB of RAM.

This is a standard tip for speeding up the start menu.
Give it a try.

Right click on an open area of the Desktop
Select Properties
Click on the Appearance tab
Click on the Effects button
Uncheck Show shadows under menus


this should speed the munus up.
