I am using Windows XP - Version 5.1 build 2600xpsp2.030422-1633:Service
Pack 1. I want to start the machine in 'safe mode' to delete some files as
mentioned in several articles. They say go to Start/Shutdown and in the drop
down box click "Shut down". I have no 'shut down' on my start menu. I have
Start/Turn off computer/Standby-Turn off - Restart.

I do have Tweak UI for XP on the machine and have used it to eliminate stuff
here and there - I do not recall taking 'shutdown' off the start menu - nor
can I find a way to replace it in Tweak UI or anywhere else.

Start menu is set with only the following:

Programs
Settings
Search
Help and Support
Run
Turn off Computer

How do I get to the safe mode?

TIA

Kelly,

The 'F8" method did not work - but the msconfig idea did - I got rebooted
into the safe mode - still could not delete the files:

C:\Program Files\Net Meeting
C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
C:\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage
C:\Program Files\Windows NT
C:\Program Files\Xerox

they are appear to be empty - and no hidden files

Thanks for you help - I use you web page frequently

Hi Bill,

You will have Turn Off Computer/Restart and hold down the F8 key or:

Go to Start/Run/Msconfig. Boot.Ini and check off /SafeBoot. Apply/Ok,
reboot.

Most welcome and thanks, Bill. Some of these you won't be able to. Is
really not worth the trouble. Good luck!
