I used a third party program to "optimize" my computer performance. OK
shame, shame, slap my hand . I ran the registry cleaner. After, I noticed
that when I ran Start - Programs, only about 7 items were listed when before
there used to be dozens of programs listed. Based on what I've been reading,
I suspect it is a registry issue. I tried running "undo" with the optimize
program but the complete Start-program list is still missing. I tried system
restore at 2 "system checkpoints" and both restores "failed." I tried
running in "safe" mode; the full program list still is not present. I tried
rebooting a couple of times, still no good.
I'm running XP in the classic mode. I switched to the XP view mode and the
green arrowhead is missing from the "All Programs" pointer. Not sure if
that's significant.
I tried several of my regular programs and the PC seems to be functioning
fine.
Not sure what to look for now to get my full program list back.
The "optimize" program has found it's way to the trash.
Thanks for your help and Merry Christmas.
