Fix/Optimize

In an effort to eliminate "customize your settings" runonce on my IE7, I ran
across several "optimizers" and PC "doctors". In running a free trial
version, I lost numerous windows files and had to restore from a safe start.
My question is not if I need the optimizer/fix program, but, who is safe to
buy such program from? Since I can't seem to find a Microsoft program that
fixes these type problems. These free scan programs shows thousands of
problems on my notebook and with its performance, I tend to believe them.
TANX!

I suggest you stay away from all these optimizer programs, in particular do
not run a registry cleaner. Just search in this newsgroup for posts on that
topic to see it fully discussed. In addition here is one link to an on
going discussion on that issue:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...3eb-7037-4d4f-bde1-d8efee1f1420&lang=en&cr=us

If you have a problem you can't fix, post it to an appropriate newsgroup.
For example for for internet explorer questions post to here:

On the left of that page is a list of all MS public newsgroups.

Bobby,

I wouldn't suggest using a registry cleaner etc because you can run them
twice once after the other & they still find things

The optimiser applications won't help too much. Some 'may' do a few registry
tweaks that maybe beneficial but that's really about it & if you study the
Windows 2000 registry in the resourse kit then you will descover these
tweaks for yourself. The majority of the 2000 registry is the same as XP &
the reference can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/w2rkbook/regentry.mspx?mfr=true

Before making changes please back up the registry beforehand & be careful

Oops, gave you the same link to the internet explorer newsgroup twice.

Research it and don't just use "Bobs super cleaner" just because it is free and they tell you, that you need it.
That is why the have "Consumers Guides".

It is good to do all these on a regular basis.
General Maintenance.

1. Do a Custom Update every once in a while to update items that are not "Critical"

2. Run Disk Cleanup

3. Remove Windows Update Unintall to free up hard disk space (*Not necessary unless you are running out of disk space*)

4. Clean Internet Explorer History, Cookies, etc.

6. Run Spybot

7. Run Adaware

8. Run your Antivirus tool or an online tool

9. Run your Nifty Registry Cleaner

That should keep it optimized and eliminate most problems.

HTH,

it would be much easier and less problem causing to just allow the run once customize to run.
if you do not want to customize anything, just ok out of it.

Nobody,

Why have you changed your Adaware link to the Spybot homepage link (your no.
7) & kept the safe networking as Spybot (your no. 6)?

I see you never followed my other suggestions with the other numbered links

Don't know how to rate your response, but, this is a great help. Also, have
you read other responses to my question? There are three of you who give
different links, some people like to know of different varities. Thank You!

Hi Newbie,

Why have you changed your Adaware link to the Spybot homepage link (your no.
7) & kept the safe networking as Spybot (your no. 6)?
I made a mistake. I posted the correct link in the wrong place.
I am done posting for now anyways.
I have other things to do.
Go ahead use them or don't use them.
I see you never followed my other suggestions with the other numbered links
I use those tools and find them to be useful.
I have no idea why their is so much diifficulty using Registry Cleaners.
I have been using them for 10 years and never had a problem.

I am a bit curious about something.
Have you used a Registry Cleaner and found that it caused errors?
Are you not recommending it because others just don't know how to use them correctly
or are just using the wrong ones?
