I use XP Pro, downloaded TweakUI and checked/unchecked boxes as per your
recommendation. This however did not make any difference.
I then checked on registry setting, value name: 'NoRecentDocsMenu' - the
value data was/is set to (0).
In Gpedit.msc - Start Menu and Taskbar - the policy/setting 'Remove
Recent
Documents item from Start Menu' is NOT listed and all other settings are
Not Configured.
Is there a way to add 'Remove Recent Documents item from Start Menu' to
Gpedit.msc - Start Menu and Taskbar?
Incidentally, My Pictures and My Music had disappeared also from the
Start
Menu but I'm not concerned about these folders.
Thanks in advance for your kind assistance and patience.
I cannot find another reg file.
If XP Pro, you can use the Group Policy editor, if XP Home you will
have to
edit the registry or get TweakUI. You can also use TweakUI with XP
Pro. TweakUI might be the easiest and has a bunch of other tweaks.
List my most recently opened documents check box...
If XP Pro, you can use the Group Policy editor (Gpedit.msc) under the
following location to configure Start menu features:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar
Policy: Remove Recent Documents item from Start Menu
Description: Removes the Recent Documents folder from the Start menu.
Also
removes the corresponding checkbox from the Start menu customization
CPL.
Set it to Not Configured.
-----
Registry setting under the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: NoRecentDocsMenu
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Policy is disabled, Recent Documents on Classic Start Menu
1 = Policy is enabled, NO Recent Documents on Classic Start Menu. Also
removes the corresponding checkbox from the Start menu customization
CPL.

Using TweakUI
TweakUI
[+] Explorer
Check: Allow Recent Documents on Start menu
[[This check box enables the display of “Documents” on the classic
start menu and enables the “List my most recently opened documents”
checkbox on
the Start menu customization dialog.]]
UNCheck: Clear document history on exit
[[This check box will control whether Explorer will clear the recent
documents history, run dialog history and typed-URL history when
you log off]]
Check: Maintain document history
[[This enables the tracking of recently opened documents on the Start
menu and on the file menu of many applications. (Note that some
applications do not respect this setting). ]]

Thanks for response and advise.
I downloaded both files successfully but unfortunately the My Recent
Documents Folder did not restore in the (Classic) Start Menu.
I right clicked Start, clicked Properties ==>Classic Start Menu
==>Customize and found in the 'Advanced Start menu option' an
additional
entry: an arrow pointing to Recent Documents Menu and 3 check boxes
for Clear Documents Menu on Exit, Don't Add to Documents Menu and
Hide Documents Menu.
The 'List my most recently opened documents check box' is still not
present.
If the My recent Documents Folder can not be restored would it be
possible
to add a copy of My Documents to the lower part of the Classic Start
Menu together with expansion arrow?
Kind regards,

After running Windows File Protection (click Start - Run type in scf
/scannow) I discovered that the Favorites Folder and the My Recent
Documents Folder have disappeared from the Start Menu.
I was able to restore the Favorites Folder very easily.
For the My Recent Documents Folder, I tried to implement the below
mentioned procedure but without success as the item "List my most
recently opened documents check box" is nowhere to be found in both
Start Menu and Classic Start Menu.
"To show your most recently used documents on the Start menu
Right-click the Start button, and then click Properties.
On the Start Menu tab, click Start menu, and then click Customize.
On the Advanced tab, select the List my most recently opened
documents
check box.
The next time you click Start, the My Recent Documents folder is on
the Start menu. This folder contains the documents and files you
opened recently."
Any assistance is greatly appreciated for reinstating the My Recent
Documents Folder to the Start Menu.
