Start menu Icons hosed up

Suddenly, about half of my Start Menu Icons have changed from the ones
appropriate for the pertinent programs to the generic ones Windows assigns
when nothing is available. When I R-Click on the Icon and select
Properties\Change Icon, I get a message stating that %SystemRoot%\Installer\
something or other can't be found.

This folder doesn't exist, and as far as I know it never has. For each one,
I have to manually browse for the executable file and assign the Icon from
there.

Any suggestions as to what caused this? A quick fix would be most welcome
as well.

Thanx:

No effect, but thanx for the response. I've also lost the distinctive icons
for various file types in Explorer.

By that I mean that I can still double click a .doc file and have it open in
Word, or a .pdf file and have it open in Adobe Acrobat, the icons displayed
in Explorer no longer indicate the file's association, but have cahange to
the small box with 3 small symbols that MS seems to assign to unknown file
types.

None of this has happened to the whole system, but so far I've found out all
the icons and files associated with anything MS Office related, Adobe
related, Corel related, and a few others are having this problem.

Thanx,

A full system scan conducted last night revealed nothing. If you have any
idea about a specific infection, maybe I can do a web search and find a
specific remedy.
