Start menu files and shortcuts with .lnk

When my system was booted up, start menu files and shortcuts appeared with
..lnk for no reason. They are unexecutable and I tried to run RegCure
software in hope to correct the problem, but no luck.

Anyone of you who have experienced with this can help me with an appropriate
software to resolve the problem or by making any suggestion.

Thanks.

I have downloaded "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix (Restores Default
Shortcut Behavior)" from www.dougknox.com website as per your suggested. I
have unzipped the file and created a folder "lnkfile_fix - folder" and a file
lnkfile_fix.reg under the folder. I double-clicked it in hope to install on
my system. The window "Windows Installer" popped up and the message said
"This installation package could not open. Contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.".

I don't know what happened to the Windows Installer that does not function.

Right-click the .reg file, click Merge.

That is not what you said when you emailed me but please read my
response, which is not much different from Elmo's.

I don't have a "Merge" when right-clicked the .reg file. Is it supposed to
be there in Windows XP Home Edition SP2? Is there an alternate way to
install the .reg file?

Yes, that should be the default action.

Yes, you can right-click the file, click Edit. Open it in Wordpad or
Notepad if prompted on what to open with. Compare the entries to those
in Regedit and change a necessary. But I would try the associations fix
for .reg files on the same page, and then a double-click of other reg
files as needed, would be merged properly. Problem is, that file is
about as big.

Try this instead. Afterwards, lnkfile_fix.reg might merge:

Open Folder Options, File Types tab, scroll down to the Reg entry, click
to highlight it, click the Advanced button, click Merge, click Edit,
these should be the entries:

Action:
Mer&ge

Application used..:
regedit.exe "%1"

"Use DDE" should be checked.

Application:
regedit

Topic:
System

(Blank panes were not listed above.)

If Merge isn't an available action, click "New" add the action, add the
entries above.

Yes, there is an alternate way.
Open Regedit. (Start-Run-Regedit)
Use File-Import and import the .reg file.

Whoops! That'd be much easier than what I suggested. I'd seen that
that option before, but clearly forgot about it.
