start menu does not respond to clicks

In classic view, when clicking on an item in the start menu, the menu just
disappears (both left and right click). When I change to normal view,
everything is fine. When changing back, the problem is back to.
I've restarted the PC but nothing changed. Any ideas?

About a week after I experienced the problem mentioned (and worked with the
normal view), I tried the classic view again and.. behold it works just fine
now. So the problem is gone, the mystery stays.
