Start In Dos Mode

I Need help starting in dos mode, my pc wont allow it.

I tryed f8 at start up but ms dos option is not there.

I need to format my pc via dos, windows keeps bodging up and the reload disk
does not fix it. I hope by a total format and re-installing It will fix the
errors.

One error is my pc just decides to restart on its own, virus scan finds
nothing.

You mean that the program or application must start in DOS
mode, which it can in a DOS windows or under DOS emulation?
Of do you really mean in DOS? If so, then why not build a
DOS machine in the first place?

Running your recovery should format and put everything back to the way it was
when you bought your PC you may have to choose the advanced mode if they are
HP recovery disks this will do a destructive recovery and format and
reinstall. If the disk is a regular Windows XP disk then you did not go far
enough to get to the format screen or you didn't pay attention when it asked
you to format. the sequence if it is a XP disk is First screen enter, second
screen f8, third screen may show and ask if you want to repair if it does
then hit esc, fourth screen is where you hit D and follow the steps to delete
the partitions and then hit enter on the partition to go to the next screen
and select format. If you are stuck and still need to get into dos then Go
to...

Download Windows 98 SE Custom, No Ramdrive

Format a floppy disk and run the bootdisk creator that you downloaded.

Boot from the floppy and type "fdisk" without quotes. Tell it that you want
to work with non dos drives or whatever and format the drive. Then run your
recovery disks.

It's not there on anybody else's Windows XP computer either.

Unlike Windows Me, 98, and earlier versions, Windows XP is not built on DOS,
and there is no underlying DOS. You can't boot from it because it isn't
there.

The only to boot to DOS is from a DOS diskette.

No, the way to format your computer's hard drive is not to boot to DOS, but
to boot to your CD. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot
order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted,
then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Random restarting is usually a hardware problem, not Windows. If that's the
case, reinstalling Windows will do nothing to fix it.

However, you are presumably blue-screening, and you are set to reboot
whenever that happens. Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. On
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System
failure, uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get the
blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those details for
more help.

Not to put too fine a point on it, you don't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit (and now
64-bit) graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest
generation, has never used, included, or "ridden upon" MS-DOS. The
Recovery Console's CLI (Command Line Interface) is the closest you can
come to the old "DOS mode." What, precisely, are you trying to accomplish?

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

That's probably hardware-related, anyway. A reinstallation may not
help, unless it's a device driver that's causing the problem.

For starters, check to make sure all of your cooling fans are working,
the PC's airways are all unobstructed, and blow out any dust from inside
the case.

Additionally, you should check your Event Logs to see if they can
shed any light on the matter, To do so, Right-click My Computer >
Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application. Record the specifics
of any red-flagged error messages and post the exact text back here.
Again, hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

Sorry, I can't help you with your dos start up. I have a similar problem...I
can't get mine to shut off...

I was trying to restore the original settings on my old computer (Windows 98
system). I was told to shut down the computer, using "restart in MS-DOS.
When I turn the computer back on it says "starting in MS".

I don't know how to get out of the dos....I need help with that...I'm not
very good at figuring out what to do. I've tried just about everything.

Can anyone help me?

And good luck with your starting problem.

run ,type msconfig , click ok.then you have some startup options there.I
don't have a 98 system around so i can't check for sure.

Just type

EXIT and press the Enter key.

If that doesn't work, type

WIN

or

WIN /X

(I really can't remember how the "X" is included..) None of this will
help reset Windows settings, but it will get you back into Windows.
