Start button recent favorites

Brian

I use XP Pro and, until a few days ago, when I selected 'Favorites' from the
Start Menu I would first see a list of the most recently visited sites. The
full list would only be displayed if no selection was made within about 5
seconds.
I am not sure if this is standard XP functionality or if it was added by one
or other tweak performed in the past.
In any case, it has gone and I now get just the full list of favorites. I
did use some utilities to clean out redundant files last week and I suspect
the disappearance is due to that.
Can anyone offer any suggestions for restoring the short-list?

Thanks,

Brian

Left out a bit of info haven't you?

Turn on Personalised Menus in Classic menu's properties.

If running XP in compatability mode you should mention it.

In that case your favourites weren't hidden. Sure you don't mean IE's Favourites menu which is a seperate setting.

You don't seem to have grasped what I mean. I am talking about a short-list
of ten recently visited sites favorites. That listing had disappeared and I
now only get the full list of favorites (favourites).

There is no list of 10 favourites. There is Recent Documents, which has 10 unless changed by your administrator.

Start - Control Panel - Taskbar & Start Menu - Start Menu - Classic - Advanced - List My Recent Documents

We're going round in circles. My set-up has been displaying a list of 10
recently visited web sites selected from the Favorites list. If you didn't
click on one of those ten within a few seconds, the full Favorites list
appeared. That short-list is no longer appearing but the full list appears
immediately.
As I said in my first posting, it is possible that this functionality was
installed/configured by another utility and I have forgotten. From what you
say, it seems that it is not a standard feature of XP Pro.

Only on classic, and it's not 10. It's in a period of time.

But do you have any answer as to why it is not working?

It may have become corrupted, but if you do not know its name or where it
came from, it now may be lost. It likely was not a part of Windows.

It is working. It's your memory that isn't.

Each of your responses has had a cynical tone to it!

I am looking for help here and all you can do is make sarcastic remarks!
That is not what the MVP program is about.

For your information - my Favorites Short-list has ceased to function. I am
sure this is due to a registry entry having been removed or changed by a
clean-up program that I used last week. I need to know if there is any way
that can be restored. The same program seems to have erased all of my
restore points.

You are wrong. This feature is only in classic start menu. If I was wrong plenty of people will be jumping in and telling me (that's the price one pays for being arrogant). I've mentioned the only three possibilities that you could be referring to.

I'm not an mvp either.

What you need to do is believe me. Then you may find the answer to your query. But what you say isn't true, and while you insist it is you will continue going nowhere (because you're wearing blinkers and aren't considering "well what did I see?").

1. Only Classic Start Menu and IE's Favourites menu hide entries (also Office's menus)

2. This is not based on any number, it will show recently used by time.

3. There is recent documents, this showed 10 (I think) in previous versions and 15 in XP - it is configurable in XP.

4. It's not possible to add anything to the Start Panel (though you don't necessarly see all that can be there - but there is no extra favourite's menu).

5 Having regard to above you did not have what you described you had. I'm NOT saying you're lying just your memory of it or description is wrong. I don't doubt you saw something.

6 System Restore clears if it's turned off. This is due to the way it works - tracking changes.

I have been using XP Pro professionally for the last 18 months and I know
very well that my Favorites listing has presented as a short-list of ten or
so recent items, the full list only appearing after a few seconds of
indecision. However, I am not sure if this is a standard feature of the
Classic Start Menu or if it was one of several tweaks made long ago.

I use the Classic Start Menu.
2. This is not based on any number, it will show recently used by time.

OK but it hasn't done so in the last two days. Maybe it will revive itself
in time
3. There is recent documents, this showed 10 (I think) in previous
versions and 15 in XP - it is configurable in XP.

Maybe there is a dual function here but I have no way of knowing.
4. It's not possible to add anything to the Start Panel (though you don't
necessarly see all that can be there - but there is no extra favourite's

I understand that.

Sorry but I disagree as stated above.

System Restore is turned on and I have never turned it off. Again, I believe
the registry clean-up has corrupted some entries.

Then why are you masquerading under the mvps.org e-mail address?

My first reply to you told you how to turn on for the classic start menu. You replied that you didn't use the classic start menu.

I've reread it and used the phrase compatability [with Win2000/WinME] rather than classic.

Wait several days and it will happen. They all show by default then thy hide as they are unused. You must have reset your count. How long has it been since they all started showing.

I didn't reset anything but this registry clean up utility evidently did.
That is why I was worried that the registry may have been corrupted.
The clean up routine was run Friday evening, since when the Favorites
display has changed. I have had previous experience of the "recent" folder
being empied and the short-list has immediately started to recover. That is
not the case here so I am still of the opinion that something has been
screwed up. My guess is that the same thing happened with the restore points
as there are none before Saturday.

My Recent Documents. Rt click on
Start>Select Properties>Start Menu-Customize>Advanced
Check the "List my most frequently open documents" Box.

Thanks for the suggestion but that only applies to the XP Start Menu and
anyway relates to Documents, not Favorites.
I use the Classic Start Menu which, if configured to do so, normally
displays the most frequently visited Favorites.
In my case, it no longer works that way, even though it is configured
correctly.
