Start Button does not work

Normally I will go for days without rebooting my system but sometimes when I
click on the start button the menu does not appear. When this happens and I
click on an icon in the taskbar (I have installed the function that stacks
icons for the same application) I do not see a popup menu to select the
desired window or if I have just one occurance of an application clicking on
that icon in the taskbar does not bring that application to the foreground.
Rebooting resolves the issue until it happens again. I have not been able to
establish any sequence of events that brings it on.

Normally I will have 10-20 different applications running and in some cases
I will have multiple occurances of an application.

What happens when you press a Windows key?

Your situation is a perfect example of why you ought to reboot once in a
while.

A few ill-behaved programs do incremental damage to system stability. What
is at first inconsequential for the first day or so finally becomes major.
I have a sleep mode set up (when I check sleep, main memory, graphics
memory, and machine state are saved to disk before the system turns off),
and after a few days wierdness happens. Windows NT base operating systems
are much more stable than the earlier Windows operating systems, but stuff
still happens; especially when you have a lot of third party programs
running. I agree with 'Wes'; rebooting is like a good breakfast - it keeps
you going all day B>)

I agree that a reboot is a good thing to do after a period of time but on
this one system (my most used system, IBM ThinkPad T43p) it sometimes happens
two or three times a day. "Normally" when it happens it takes a couple of
days. I know that I really need to also clean up what starts up at boot time.
I've been so busy the last year that I've just not had the time. Normally I
spend hours a day on my PC but the last year has been totally different and
sometimes I cannot get to the system for a couple of days (talk about
withdraw - yipes!).
