Start>All Programs list question

Hi. I am a complete novice to XP Home SP2-(I came over from 98SE). Although I
do use Pro at work, I didn't have to set it up...
OK, On my All Programs list, a number of the entries are "highlighted" (a
yellow background). Also when I click on, or hover over, the All Programs
'button' a flag comes up telling me that new programs have been installed.(I
know that !) At first only one program was highlighted (not one I installed,
but the vendor) and now there are several, including in the 'accessories'
folder. Some of these I have installed, others are part of the system. I have
no idea what this means or how to address it. Can anyone help this admitted
"Dummy"? (Please don't get TOO technical on me, OK? :-| )
Cheers

Turn off the "Highlight newly installed programs" here
Right click Start menu > Properties > Customize > Advanced tab > Uncheck
"Highlight newly installed programs"
