Star Office -- RIP

J

Jeff Needle

I'm pretty new around here, so I don't know if this has been discussed
at length -- seems most everything else has been.

I used Star Office some years ago. Although it was a pain in the neck
in some ways, it pulled everything together in one place, and I really
like that idea. When Sun removed the e-mail and other modules for their
upgrade, Ijust groaned.

I don't know anyone who has developed anything quite so tightly
integrated as Star did. I would love to find something that could pull
it all together in one package.

Why did Sun decide to strip the package down so much? I would likely
have paid for the upgrade.

Of course, freeware is better...<grin>

I've tried EasyOffice, and it's not even close. And OpenOffice, of
course, likewise misses the boat by not having the modules that Star
did. And 602PCSuite doesn't even have a database!

Sigh.

Hi Jeff!

Why did Sun decide to strip the package down so much? I would likely
have paid for the upgrade.

Sun removed the email and news functionality out of two simple reasons:
1. both parts were the buggiest parts in the package
2. it would have taken a lot of resources (read this as time and money) to
get rid of the bugs

Now, with most new users to StarOffice (read this as users coming to it
when Sun gave it away for free with version 5.1a) demanding separate
applications, or in other words, to get rid of the desktop, resources were
bound up elsewhere.
Of course, freeware is better...<grin>

Switch to OpenOffice.org.
I've tried EasyOffice, and it's not even close. And OpenOffice, of
course, likewise misses the boat by not having the modules that Star
did. And 602PCSuite doesn't even have a database!

I doubt that email and news will ever be written into
StarOffice/OpenOffice.org again. There are far better alternatives out
there.

Greetings,

Joachim
