Standby Problems with Dec. Update

D

Don Miller

After the latest update, when I place the computer (XP Pro SP2) on standby
(power light is flashing) and then try to wake it up (the power light stops
flashing and it sounds like it is waking up as I've done for months), there
is no video signal and the screen is black. Since it sounds like it is
awake, I tried a few keyboard commands (Windows key, u for turn off
computer, r for restart) without effect (pressing CAPS Lock doesn't turn a
keyboard light on), so it is not a video problem, the computer just hangs
when coming off standby.

I uninstalled the latest patches (KB923689, 926255, 923694 and the Windows
Media patch), restarted the computer, and the problem persisted. I then did
a System Restore to the day before the update, and now my system is
operational again and Standby works fine.

I am reluctant to apply the updates again. Is anyone else having this
problem?

You could apply them one at a time to see if you can isolate the one causing
the problem. Also peruse the posts in the windows update newsgroup to see
if this has come up.
