Standby Problem

Bruce

After I had this computer for a while, Dell 2400, it stopped going into
standby mode. I was not aware of the problem using a 3D screen saver. I did
have the fix-it patch, but it still messed up. I eventually re-installed XP
and everything was fine for a couple of months. Now, when I tap a key to
come out of standby I hear the click and the lights on the tower come on,
but I get no Data light on the cable modem and the monitor remains black and
its power light is orange, not green. I reboot and everything is OK. Cable
modem was tested and is fine. Any thoughts?
Many thanks.

This is often caused by a driver problem. Check the various device
manufacturer websites especially for your graphics card and soundcard for
the latest drivers for your devices.

If you are using a screensaver other than what came with XP, try using one
of the XP Screensavers to see if you still have the issue.

Michael:
Haven't been using any SS. About a driver. I constantly get a message after
booting up: In the blue line: Epson Printer Port. In the text of the gray
box: At least one device or driver has failed......... . I had downloaded
the latest Epson drivers, then deleted them and went back to the driver that
came with the software. Still got this message. Posted about this problem,
but all the replies I got could not remedy this error message. Do you think
there is a connection? Been getting this message for about 2 months. Standby
problem about 2 weeks.
Thanks again.

It's possible though I would have thought you would have seen it sooner.
Nonetheless, open Printers and Faxes in Control Panel, find your printer,
select it, right click and delete it, accept the option to delete files no
longer needed if it presents itself, disconnect the printer from the PC,
reboot and see if you still have the issue.

Michael:
Did as you said, and when I rebooted I did not get the error message. I went
into standby mode manually and it recovered like it should. Next, since I
need the printer, I went to the Epson site and downloaded the driver, but
this time I didn't download the status monitor. I will let it go into
standby using power settings a few times and also reboot a few times {not
all tonight} to see for sure as the error message and the reboot problem
happened most, but not all the time. I am encouraged though. I'll re-post in
a day, or two if the problems come back. Meanwhile, have a nice Turkey Day,
and thanks again.

You have a nice one as well, Bruce.

This sounds very encouraging.
