Standby Problem-COM 1 Port Conflict

When I try to go into standby, I get this message: "The
device driver of the Communicator Port (COM 1) device is
preventing the machine from entering standby. Please
close all applications and try again. If the problem
persists, you may need to upgrade the driver." This
occurs even though no applications are open. In device
manager there is an exclamation point next to "parallel
device", but I don't believe I have anything attached to
COM 1. If I click parallel device it says to upgrade the
driver, but when I try that it says it can't be upgraded
because it can't find the software. The bottom line is
that after trying to enter standby, I can no longer
access the internet without restarting the machine. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

This is a post I made before on this. The same applies,
install something, like a modem, from the device manage
force it to Com 1 then after it's on Com 1 uninstall it.

You can try this otherwise you'll never get a answer in
here.

Com 1 and Com 2 are physical ports and have IRQ assignments
From there the ports are virtual There 256 of them. The
problem is once they are assigned they cannot be deleted,
but they can be un-installed there a trick to do. I had a
laptop that I was having issues with and had gone up to
port 16, from failed installs. The program would not
recognize anything above port 5. When you install
something it is automatically assigned the first open
port, but it goes to the higher # ( if 5,6,7 are open and
8,9 are (in use) it will assign port 10 you install
something, thus the problem.

How I corrected it was to take a USB modem and keep
installing it and go into the device manager and change it
to a port that showed (in Use) that I knew was not, then
when that port is accepted go back in and uninstall it.
Keep doing it over and over till you get them all out.
