standby/hibernate

I recently upgraded my notebook pc from windows xp home
to xp pro. I have done all the updates for drivers, and
programs possible from the windows website.

I am getting an error 50 cannot enter standby mode, and
the same error for entering hibernate mode. As well, the
standby/hibernate function is greyed out in the
start/shutdown menu.

Thirdly, i no longer have a hibernate tab in the power
options menu.

Can anyone please help,

Regards,
Adam ([email protected]).

Hi,

You need to check with notebook manufacturer for supporting device drivers
if you used a retail version of WinXP Pro. You arelikely using default
drivers that do not support the standby and hibernate function.

Hi,
It worked before i did the upgrade. Like i mentioned, i
have done all the downloads from windows website, and i
am currently up to date on all drivers.
If you have any more info, let me know,

Hi Adam,

Again, the loss of the standby and hibernate function is a driver issue. One
or more of the installed drivers do not support it, therefore it is disabled
(or grayed out). This can only be resolved by installing (by either
upgrading or downgrading) to supporting driver sets. As this is a notebook,
it is highly likely that you need a custom driver set for ALL of the
hardware, most is probably not properly supported in the retail version of
WinXP. Downloads from the WindowsUpdate site cover security issues and
provide basic driver function, not full driver function which is what you
need. You may also want to consider contacting the notebook manufacturer for
a customized upgrade that will contain the needed driver sets.

hi Rick,

Appreciate your help. That gives me a more clear
understanding of the drivers issue. what driver would I
be looking for? I have a utility disk that came with the
computer, but don't know what driver to look for.
Can you help?

My notebook (Toshiba) utility disk has drivers for video, sound,
touchpad, and power saver settings. Yours may be different, but I
would install whatever drivers the disk contains. As Rick has said,
it almost certainly is a driver that is not supported by your
hardware.

You may be able to narrow it down by opening Control Panel -> System
->
Hardware -> Device Manager. Expand the hardware tree and go through
the devices: video, sound, bus, etc. Right click each device in turn
and select properties. Then select the driver tab. Information
given should reveal if a specific driver is troublesome. (Not signed,
not working correctly, and so forth.)

Thanks.
I have another question for you though....in regards to
the stanby/hibernate.
You mentioned that you received a utility disk from the
manufacturer with your laptop.
I found mine. I went to install the drivers, and it
won't install them because my display adapter is not
present. i didn't even have a display adapter in the
device manager.
any idea what to do next?

Boot the machine to safe mode first and then try again to install
the drivers. (should be able to press F8 during POST to enter safe
mode) It may be the utility disk installation procedure is designed
to work with the laptop as it was originally setup. In other words,
it's proprietary to the original system from the factory.

When you installed the retail version of Pro, it may not have
installed the correct display driver. That's probably why the
adapter is not present in Device Manager and could very well be the
reason you no longer have "Standby" or "Hibernate".

Some laptops can be upgraded rather easily while others can be a real
nightmare. The more proprietary the laptop, the more difficult it is
to upgrade.

Still issues.

Wondering if i can email you to pick your brain a little
more. Our reply's are getting hard to track here.

I tried the safe mode thing...getting the same errors as
before.

any other ideas?

I found that my laptop is using a default monitor, and
have not adapters or adapter info.

Not sure how to correct. It's as if it's not picking up
the fact that it has a monitor.

Adam
